10 October 2024 – The National Osteoporosis Foundation of South Africa (NOFSA) is excited to announce its participation in this year’s World Osteoporosis Day campaign, themed “Say No to Fragile Bones.” On October 20th, people around the globe will unite to raise awareness about osteoporosis, encouraging individuals of all ages to prioritise bone health and take proactive measures against this silent but serious disease.

The theme, “Say No to Fragile Bones,” emphasises the need to end the inertia surrounding bone health and inspire individuals to take action in protecting their bones. NOFSA, in collaboration with global health organisations, will focus on three key messages:

  1. Our bone health is precious
Strong bones are the foundation of our mobility, well-being, and independence. Through this message, NOFSA will stress the importance of osteoporosis prevention by promoting bone-healthy nutrition, regular physical activity, and lifestyle choices that support long-term bone strength.
  2. Osteoporosis is a serious health threat
With potentially devastating consequences, osteoporosis demands attention. NOFSA will highlight the importance of early diagnosis, osteoporosis screenings, and consistent adherence to prescribed treatments to reduce the risk of fractures and long-term complications.
  3. Make bone health a policy priority
Osteoporosis poses a growing global challenge, with significant human and economic impacts. NOFSA is calling on health authorities to prioritise bone health in healthcare policies, invest in post-fracture care, and promote measures that support healthy bones throughout life.

Tereza Hough, CEO of NOFSA, underscores the urgency of taking action: “We are urging everyone to ‘Say No to Fragile Bones’ by valuing and protecting their bone health. Osteoporosis can affect anyone, but with the right knowledge, nutrition, and lifestyle, we can all reduce our risk. World Osteoporosis Day is the perfect opportunity to remind people of the simple yet impactful steps they can take to secure a healthier, more independent future.”

NOFSA encourages South Africans to get involved by participating in their Rattle Them Bones Fun Run, taking place on 2 November at Groot Constantia, accessing their educational resources, and spreading the message of bone health within their communities.
